Most problems turn out to be one of the ones below. If none of them fit, there is a real person at the bottom of this page.
This page covers version 2.11. To check which one you have, open
chrome://extensions and look under Gilmedia SERP Counter.
The parts of it
Everything starts from the orange G in the toolbar. The popup is a launcher: the master switch, the city you are searching from, the keyword you want to run, and three cards for the lists themselves. The long editing happens on the settings pages, which are one page with four tabs across the top:
- Locations keeps the list of cities. Pick one and every Google search runs as if you were standing there, page one and every page after it.
- Keywords keeps the searches you run over and over, grouped by industry. One click runs a keyword from whichever city is set.
- Settings has the light and dark theme, the colour, shape, font and size of the badges, and the order and names of the sections in the panel.
- Domains is the list of domains and business names you want marked, with search, duplicate detection, import and export.
- General holds the light and dark theme, the colour, shape, font and size of the badges, the order and names of the sections in the panel, and the addresses of any shared list files on your own server.
- Help is the long version of the list format and what each badge means.
On the results page itself, the panel in the corner is grouped by surface - Organic, LSA, Ads, Maps, AI, Other Channels - with a Results tab and a Keywords tab, and it prints the city each hit was found from underneath it. A row of page circles sits under the panel header, and again at the foot of it, so page 4 is one click rather than a scroll to the bottom of the results.
Common fixes
Only some results are numbered now, not all of them
That is deliberate, and it is the default from version 2.5 on. Every result is still counted, so a badge always shows the true rank across pages - the badge is just not drawn on results that have nothing to do with you. A page full of numbers on strangers is noise you have to read past to find your own.
If you want every result numbered again, open Settings and turn off Badge only my own matches under General.
Nothing is highlighted at all
Almost always an empty domain list on that particular computer. The list rides in your Chrome profile, so a machine you have not signed into, or a fresh profile, starts empty. Open the popup: if the Domains card says it is showing the sample list, nothing of yours has been saved here yet. Paste your list in, or point the machine at your shared list file.
The camera button says it needs permission
Copying a result as a picture means taking a picture of the tab, and Chrome only allows that after you have given the tab away deliberately. Right-clicking the result and choosing Copy this result as an image does exactly that, which is why the right-click route always works and the hover button can fail on a tab you have just opened.
Two ways round it. Use the right-click item once on that tab and the camera button works for the rest of your time on it. Or open the popup and turn on Enable one-click copy captures, which asks Chrome for the permission once and for good, and the button then works on the first click on any tab. It is off when the extension is installed and staying off costs you nothing but that extra right-click.
No numbers are showing up at all
Reload the page. The extension reads the results when the page loads, so if you installed it while a search was already open, that tab has not seen it yet. If a reload does not do it, open the extension's popup and check that the result types you care about are still ticked. They can be switched off individually.
My domain is not turning green
Paste the domain in however you like. https://www.example.com/pricing and
example.com both work, and subdomains like shop.example.com match
example.com too. What will not match is a typo or a different registered
domain, so example.net stays grey when you searched for the .com.
A result only counts as yours when the site itself is yours. A review page at
reviews.example.org/listing/example.com has your domain in its address but
belongs to somebody else, so it is marked amber as a mention under Other Channels rather than
green. That is a ranking for the review site, not for you, and counting it as your own is how
a position 11 turns into a position 4 that is not real.
A business shows up in the map results but stays grey
Map listings and Local Services Ads show a business name, not a web address, so there is no domain there to match against. Add the business name in the second column and it will start matching:
example.com | Example Company
The name is optional, but without it the local results have nothing to go on. Give both and you are covered everywhere.
I set a city but the results look the same
Almost always the spelling. Google takes the location as one string of its own place names,
and if it does not recognise the string it drops the whole thing and runs an ordinary search
without a word about it. The extension catches that and the panel says
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada - Google ignored it, so if you see that line the city is
the problem and not the extension.
The format is City,Region,Country, no spaces after the commas, spelled out in
full the way Google spells it:
- Right:
Ottawa,Ontario,CanadaandTampa,Florida,United States -
Wrong:
Ottawa, ON, CA. Abbreviated province, abbreviated country, spaces after the commas, three separate reasons for Google to throw it away.
A bare Ottawa with no region and country is refused on the Locations page before
it can be saved, because that one is guaranteed to be ignored.
If the spelling is right and the line still says Google ignored it, that particular search is one Google would not localise. Reload it, or try the search again from the popup.
The location disappeared on page 2
It should not, and keeping it is most of the point. Google's own Next link carries no location on it at all, which is why other tools lose it after page one, so the extension stitches the location back onto every Google search link on the page, and reloads any results page that still arrives without it.
It gives up after two tries on the same page rather than looping, and when it gives up the panel says so. Reload the page and it goes back on. If the panel says the location is on and names the city, page 4 is running from the same place page 1 was.
My shared list will not load
The Locations and Keywords pages, and the domain list manager, can pull their list from a text file on your own server, optionally behind a username and password. When the fetch fails, the message under the box is the specific reason:
- this file needs a username and password - the server asked for one and you have not given one. Click the lock next to the URL and fill it in.
- wrong username or password - it was sent and the server refused it. Check it against the file on the server, not against what you remember.
- the server said 404 - usually a wrong URL, but not always. Some servers answer a failed password with a 404 instead of the proper 401, on purpose, so that a scanner cannot tell a protected folder from a missing one. If the URL is right and you are sure the file is there, treat a 404 as a wrong password and check the credentials.
- that link returns a web page, not the file - the URL points at a share page or a preview rather than the file. Dropbox, Google Drive and GitHub all do this. Use the raw or direct link, the one that shows plain text in the browser with no page around it.
- could not reach that URL - the host is refusing the request because it comes from another site. Whoever runs the server has to allow cross-site fetches on that file, or you can host the list as a GitHub raw link, which allows them already.
One line per entry in all three files, and # starts a comment. In the keyword
file a # line is the industry heading and the keywords go under it. If the fetch
works but nothing lands, the file parsed to nothing usable, and the message says which lines
were thrown out.
Clicking a keyword does nothing, or opens the wrong thing
A keyword runs in the tab you are already in, because the search you clicked is the search you want to look at, and a new tab per click leaves you closing tabs instead of reading rankings. Hold Ctrl, Cmd or Shift while clicking to open it in a new tab, the way those keys work on any link.
The search runs from the city that is currently set. If nothing is set, it runs from your own connection, and the top of the Keywords tab says which it is before you click.
Nothing happens at all when there are no keywords saved yet. Open the Keywords page, add an industry, and type keywords under it, or load the worked example on that page to see the file format.
Searches open on the Google you are already on, and the country comes from the location, not
from the address. That is deliberate. Sending a Canadian search to
google.ca gets a flat 403 out of Google, because a scripted jump onto a country
domain carrying a location parameter looks like scraping.
The numbers went back to 1 on page two
That happens when the page was reached in a way that dropped Google's own offset from the address bar. Click through using the numbered pagination at the bottom of the results and it picks the count back up. The positions come from that offset, not from a count the extension keeps by itself, which is exactly why they stay honest.
Position 31 on page 4 is shown as 31 with p4.1 under it: the true
rank, and where it sits on the page you are looking at. Settings can turn that second number
off, or show it instead of the true rank.
Installing it
Install it from the Chrome Web Store, then pin the orange G icon to your toolbar. The full walkthrough, with pictures, is on the install guide, which also covers loading it unpacked from the source if you would rather run your own copy.
If Chrome warns that the extension is not trusted by Enhanced Safe Browsing, that refers to how long this publisher has been on the store rather than to the code. It went live in August 2026. Click Continue to install.
Reporting a bug
Bug reports are genuinely welcome, particularly about detection. Google changes the shape of its results pages regularly and something that worked in March can quietly stop working in August. The useful details are: the search term, the city you were searching from if you set one, which page number, and what you expected to see instead.
Send it through the contact form or the contact details below and it will get logged and looked at.

Short version: nothing is collected and nothing is sent to us, because there is no server on our end to send it to. The one request the extension can make is one you set up yourself, fetching a shared list file from an address you typed. Pictures copied off a result are built in your browser and go to your clipboard, not to us and not to disk. The full policy spells out what is stored in your own browser, every permission the extension asks for, and why each one exists.
